TimeSpaceRevisited

2002

TimeSpaceRevisited, is a time delay machine. Anchoring places in space with places in time,
due to a point on the tape is a point in space, as well as a point in time. This is a trajectory of my
“Time/Space - Space/Time” converters, where the nature of the tape is used as an Einstein-ian
metaphor for time-space as Time and Space are “glued” together into a physical form.
The time delay machine enables the audience to interact with earlier recordings of them-
selves and for example see the “present” of people who are no longer present in the space.
You are encountered with a machine, which display the past and offers you the experience to
interfere with it. The video display, is an accumulated past, which becomes the present – en-
abling the viewer to interact within an action, which has already become “past”.
The work consists of two U-Matic video machines, held by a single supporting arm, which are
rotating around a central drum, at a constant speed. The tape of the video is stretched around
the surface of the drum and is feed into both U-Matic machines. The machine picks up the tape
in its circular motion. The tape becomes a visible trace of time.
One machine acts as the recorder, recording the signal from a video - camera onto the tape.
The other machine is a player, reading from the tape and sending the information to the pro-
jector. Both the camera and the projector are fixed to the rotating arm, pointing in the same
direction.
The time – delay, between the recorded point on the tape and until the same point is dis-
played, are exactly 42 seconds. So what is recorded, when the cam recorder points north, will
be played back and projected 42 seconds later on the south wall. Again the displayed image
will be recorded and displayed on the north wall. It is a constant display of images layered on
top of each other, as the machine is constantly recording and playing along the journey of the
rotating arm and so on - in to infinity.
